Choose the Voice for Spoken Alerts

Pick the natural-sounding voice that reads Ride Mode alerts out loud, hear each one first, and download a better free voice that works with no service.

iPhone AppLast Updated

Ride Mode reads some things out loud so you don't have to look at your phone: announcements from the leader, Regroup Point Set, a rider falling behind the group (leader and tail gunner) and a Mechanical Issue tap. OnMyLead reads them in the most natural voice on your phone, and you can pick a different one.

Every voice OnMyLead uses is stored on your phone, so spoken alerts keep working with no service.

Picking a voice is a Pro feature. See Free and Pro. On a Free account, alerts are still read out loud with the Automatic voice. If you picked a voice before version 2.0, the app keeps it.

Alerts are read in the language the app is in (see Change the App's Language). If the voice you picked speaks a different language, your phone's own voice for the app's language reads them instead.

Pick a Voice

  1. Go to the You tab and tap Voice.
  2. Automatic is on to start. It uses the most natural voice on your phone, and the line under it says which one.
  3. Tap Play next to any voice to hear it say "Regroup point set. Sam is falling behind."
  4. Tap a voice to use it for spoken alerts. Tap Automatic to go back.

Voices marked Premium sound the most natural, then Enhanced, then Standard. On Android, voices don't have names, so they're listed by language, such as US English Voice 1, with Natural or Standard under each. If you delete the voice you picked, OnMyLead goes back to Automatic.

Your choice follows your account to every device you sign in on. A phone or tablet that doesn't have that voice uses its best one. See Use OnMyLead on More Than One Device.

Get a More Natural Voice

Phones come with small standard voices, which can sound robotic. Better voices are a free download, and once downloaded they work with no service. If your phone has only standard voices, the Voice screen shows how to get one.

iPhone and iPad:

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak (Spoken Content on older iOS) > Voices > English.
  2. Download a Premium or Enhanced voice, such as Zoe, Ava or Evan. You can play a sample there first. Premium voices are a few hundred MB, so download them on Wi-Fi.
  3. Go back to OnMyLead's Voice screen and tap Check Again. Automatic picks the new voice.

Siri's own voice can't be used by apps.

Android phones and tablets:

  1. Open Settings and search for Text-to-speech.
  2. Choose Speech Services by Google, then Install Voice Data, and download your language.
  3. Go back to OnMyLead's Voice screen and tap Check Again.

Voices that need an internet connection are never used, so alerts don't go quiet when you lose service.

Tips

  • Spoken alerts play through whatever your phone is connected to: the speaker, earbuds or helmet comms.
  • Spoken alerts still pause while your own phone has no service and other riders look quiet. See Ride Bubble.
